Brownlow Medal winners by year

The VFL/AFL's fairest and best, as voted by the field umpires, every year since 1924. No medal was awarded from 1942 to 1945.

Where a count ended level, every medallist from that year is listed, including the 1930 count settled retrospectively in 1989 and the 2012 medal reallocated in 2016. Older club names appear where the table has them: Footscray, South Melbourne, the Brisbane Bears of 1996.

  • 98 years listed, 1924 to 2025. That is 112 medals in all, because some years have more than one.
  • Earliest year listed: Edward Greeves (1924).
  • Latest year listed: Matt Rowell (2025).
  • 91 different player names appear on the list, 1924 to 2025.
  • Every Brownlow Medal winner since 1924, year by year

    Most Brownlow Medals since 1924

How we counted: each line in the year by year tables counts for the player name exactly as the table writes it, so a player the table writes two ways counts separately under each. 1930, 1940, 1949, 1952, 1959, 1965, 1981, 1986, 1987, 1996, 2003 and 2012 have more than one line, and every player named in those years gets one medal. Nothing is listed for 1942 to 1945, so no medal is counted for those years.

Out in front: Bob Skilton, Dick Reynolds, Haydn Bunton and Ian Stewart, 3 medals each.

Each table was verified against at least two independent sources, and the checks run on every build: winner lists are audited answer by answer, split titles and vacated seasons are pinned so they can never quietly change, and a blank cell means the detail was never verified rather than papered over.
